Cats are not as big as dogs are and seem to be tolerating AirTag much easire than other larger and heavier devices. This is the only tag that my cat tolerates, hence we added it to our store (also, I bought 2 in case he loses one).
Apple has not specified the exact Bluetooth range of an AirTag, but it's believed that each AirTag supports Bluetooth 5.0 (same as the latest iPhones), which means it should be trackable within 800 feet/243 m.
I found an article that summarises very well pro/cons of the different "cat trackers". I owned 3 different trackers to date including a very expensive GPS tracker that was too heavy for my cat and was lost two weeks after I ordered it - my cat seem to be a Houdini with his collars or just leave it in bushes. He is mainly indoor cat but occasionally goes for walkabouts.
Hope it will help to make an informed decision.
